OK, yes, thanks, I hadn't done that.  However, now that I have done
that, and confirm that the junit ant task .class files are in
optional.jar, I STILL get the error when trying to run a <junit> task.

When building optional.jar you need to include junit.jar in classpath -
best 
to do that by placing itt in lib/optional/junit.jar IIRC.
