First of all, thank you very much for your reply.
I'm sure this is a memory problem.
Indeed the error message I get with the -verbose option is: Not enough space
	at java.lang.UNIXProcess.forkAndExec(Native Method)
	at java.lang.UNIXProcess.<init>(
	at java.lang.Runtime.execInternal(Native Method)
	at java.lang.Runtime.exec(
	at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Native Method)
