Guess it was a newbie error afterall.
I had created the build.xml file using wordpad and I guess some control
characters were added to the file. When I deleted the file and re-created it
using notepad, it went through fine.
Thanks to everyone who replied.

Hi
I've just downloaded and installed Ant 1.3 and am working on a sample build.
However, I keep getting the "BUILD FAILED" error with the message "Document
root element missing".

My build file resembles this
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<project name="Test" default="compile" basedir=".">
<property name="src" value="."/>
<property name="build" value="bin"/>
<property name="classpath" value="..\sdktest.jar"/>
<target name="init">
<tstamp/>
<mkdir dir="${build}"/>
</target>
<target name="compile" depends="init">
<javac srcdir="${src}" destdir="${build}" classpath="${classpath}"/>
</target>
</project>

The build file is called build.xml.
When run the build I get the following output
BUILD FAILED
c:\build\build.xml:1: Document root element is missing.

I've followed the installation instructions for windows.
Is there something obvious I'm missing out?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Anxious beginner
