There definitely can be a problem when you modify a jar some of which has
been loaded and then you go to load some more classes from it. This is, in
fact, why ant's own build is careful not to write onto the jar it is
running from. How do you know it is failing when loading rt.jar?

Hmm, bet that is why someone could not compiler their swing app and wanted
javac to have a fork attribute.
