I use Visual Slick Edit.  It's quite easy there.  Since you get access
to the command lines for any build functions as well as for new
functions you can create yourself.  It would be even easier if I would
take the time to make ant the default for java projects (i.e. templatize
it).  That can probably be done too, although I haven't investigated
how.  

VSE is not an IDE, but it has a nice class browser, so the only thing it
really lacks is a debugger.  I myself don't use a debugger often anyway
and personally find that having an integrated debugger makes me lazy -
more prone to write bad code.

I personnaly use TextPad as main editor, and the ibntegration is really
easy
: it's just an external tool, as "javac" or "java", and the output is
captured for checking the right line in source code.
