Subject RE: Machine independent newline character

That makes sense. How do I specify the new line in the text of the message?

  <mail from="marc@home.com"
        to="bletch@home.com"
        mailhost="bletch"
        message="line 1\nline2\nline3"
        subject="bletch" />

This command sends the \n as part of the message.

You don't.

SMTP uses \r\n as line separator and it's up to the receiver to
translate this back into a plattform dependent line separator. The
class used to send the email will ensure raw \n will be converted to
\r\n so you shouldn't need to care at all.
