It is XML and you can put your stuff in whatever way the XML parser
can accept it. Of course you can split a tag into several lines, but
you can't break the value of an attribute (I guess this is what you've
asked for).

So

<a id="something"
   attribute="value"
   attribute2="value2"
/>

is OK while

<a attribute="value\
split into two lines" />

is valid XML but will have a different result from what you want (the
linebreak and the backslash are going to be part of the attributes
value).
