OK,

sorry for the brief reply. That is the usual cause of this problem. This
problem is caused when ant is running under a 1.2+ VM but it is invoking a
javac from a 1.1 JDK.

You can check the what ant thinks it is running with ant -v (as you may
already know). You then need ot make sure that the version of javac that ant
finds on its classpath is from the same version of the JDK. You could try
removing the visual cafe stuff from your class path. we have had problems
with that here too.
