Also, to retrieve only jars and not source or javadocs, I figured this is a
better way: 
In your build.xml, add a "type" qualifier for ivy:retrieve. (default takes
in all files!)

<target name="resolve" description="--> retreive dependencies with ivy">
        <ivy:retrieve type="jar"/>
</target>
