Yes, and I'm sure that all the Java code in the core ANT implementation uses 
only final "variables", fields, parameters, methods and classes.

Java gives freedom to the developer. ANT takes it away.

Thanks for directing me to the <var> task.
I will unset the properties with <var name="xxx" unset="true" /> before 
setting them to achieve the desired behaviour. It's ugly, but works.
