stick xalan.jar in ANT_HOME/lib  and all will be well.

It does sound like a bug in Java1.5; so you could file there. It is probably
underneath a bug in the xsltc engine, also from the Xalan project. This is the
code-generating XSL engine that is faster in some cases, but slower and memory
hungry in others. So we could cross-file this with Xalan.

Thank you for letting us know about the problem, we will update our docs to note it.
