Your suggestion is definately a possibility, and if it was a project that I was
working on, I would go with that.

However, from the perspective of a packager, it's one more thing to patch and
another patch to maintain. Now, with defining which compiler to use, its easy
enough to define build.compiler either on the command line or in a properties
file. It would be nice to have similar way to define which VM version class
files should work with.
