Silly boy, just use this documented existing feature of Ant:

  <project name="common" default="usage" basedir="..">
  <description>
  Build script for the com.spandex.xyz.{$ant.project.name} package
  </description>

In your case the project name and the property you desired were the same, so
this should work.

HOWEVER, the following doesn't work:

  <project name="common" default="usage" basedir="..">
  <property file="common.properties"/>
  <description>
  Build script for the ${PROJ_ROOT}.{$ant.project.name} package
  </description>

That is what this feature request is now for.
