Actually I should have quoted a better example than WinZip. I can create a
correct jar using the 'jar' tool that ships with the JVM. I change to the
directory just above the 'com' package directory and issue the command like this

jar cvf datam.jar com/ 

does this 'jar' uses a different Java API from ANT task?

 Javac compiles classes files and creates long file path. 
It is the ANT jar task that is not able to include those class files in the jar
file.
