At the very least a known number of bytes should be written (32k sounds fine),
then the size of the file checked to be sure it is correct.  I say this based on
the reported behavior of Java when writing to a full volume (there is a thread
on the dev list about it).  Then you get into having to sleep waiting for some
OSes to catch up on writing the file to disk.
