the toString() returns a list of files as a string for debug
purposes (for example for Project#log()). It does actually use the two lines you
describe to get those files.

The method you decribe as a workaround is actually the
correct method to use FileSet to retrieve the list
of files in the fileset.

Marking this as works for me - I tested the task
with a reference and it gives the correct (but odd - with ';' rather
than ':' as the path separator) result.
