1. before any attributes get mapped to any string assignments in any task,
property expansion is handled by the runtime. So if mkdir doesnt work, then
neither would everything else.

2. property expansion is used broadly everywhere, so it must work.

3. but only if you use the correct kind of braces -curly- rather than round ones.

not a bug.
