It is not documented for some reasons but you can use the 'factory' attribute 
for that.
<xslt factory="a.b.c.FactoryClassName" .../>

I added this 18 months ago (my ! time flies !) and given my check-in comments 
I'm not sure what I had in mind to say it was probably better to use an inner 
element rather than what it is right now. mmmm...

I added this in case people wanted to use both xalan or saxon for example as 
they have different useful features.
