OK - it sounds that the new introspection point is more reasonable.
I can imagine a use case where one would not want auto expansion.

It would be if you are generating another build.xml file from your build.xml, 
and you have a task writexml
<writexml><![CDATA[<echo>${build.dir}</echo>]]></writexml> 
then precisely you do not want to expand this ${build.dir}
