I guess this would have the form of an optional boolean attribute 
(named "password")?

Or this attribute could have more than just two permitted values if the user 
also could choose between "suppress" and "replace characters with asterisks".

Just for curiosity, as I didn't fully get Steve's comment:
Has there been a 'better console IO' RFE placed with Sun or not?
And if so, is it accessible via an URL that could be posted here?
