tar task does not preserve permissions

Summary: tar task does not preserve permissions
           Product: Ant
           Version: 1.5.2
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: Other
         Component: Documentation
        AssignedTo: dev@ant.apache.org
        ReportedBy: johnnycobol@yahoo.com

The tar task does not preserve file permissions. If you set a file to be
executable, then tar it up, and extract the tar, the extracted file will not
have the execute permission. This is contrary to the way the tar command-line
utility works. The tar task allows you to explicitly set permissions, but I
don't find that very useful. I would rather set the file permissions on my
storage device and let the tar task pick it up from there.
