The output is

     [echo] ${they.are.equal}

Total time: 1 second>>

Irrespective of whether I do 
  <equals arg1="${user.dir}" arg2="${basedir}"/>
or 
  <equals arg1="${user.dir}/abc" arg2="${basedir}"/>

P.S.: Right, Diane Holt kindly directed me to the ant-contrib mainly for the
"foreach" feature, but I guess this doesn't really matter here since the problem
occurs identically with <condition...> as per Stefan's code snippet (amended
with an 'i' and a '"'  ;)  )
