Subject AW: ant.apache.org - Missing information on the website
Date Tue, 10 Dec 2002 08:27:28 GMT
After a "long" :-) search on jakarta.apache.org/ant I took a look at the new
site ant.apache.org and
found the new entries there.

Short English translation by me (please correct it, my English is ... not
the best):

"Ant kurz & gut" contains a full reference of the build-in tasks and their
attributes and short examples of their use. Besides the book offers a short
introduction into the work with Ant and a description of the Ant basis
elements (projects, properties, targets and tasks). Also treated are
fundamentally concepts like filesets, patternsets and path structures,
writing of own tasks, the call syntax of Ant and Optional Tasks.

The book was with 8 Euro a very cheap one. It is the only German book I know
and one of two books (+ the Definitive Guide)
which are on market at that time (spring 2002).

I haven´t read the book in the whole. A small look into shows me that most
of the information is written in the docs, too.
(The docs are much much better than in 1.3 :-)) And most of the information
I already knows. So I decided to wait for your and Eriks book.
I wanted very deep informations (How does the framework work? How to start
from Java apps? Using of loggers?). These points are not adressed by that
book.

I found a review on www.amazon.de:
4 of 5 stars:

Translation (based on Babelfish):

Mr. Edlich arranges himself to provide with 'Ant. Kurz und Gut' at Java
developers who wants a fast overview of the possibilities of Ant, or who to
intend, of bringing it fast to the employment. It refers thereby to Ant in
the version 1.4 current for printing.

After one about 20 pages of introduction to the Ant terminology, the author
gives to the Java developer with the following 65 pages a comprehensive,
clearly structured reference to the different Ant tasks, which always make
all relevant information available on the spot.

I missed an index, which facilitates a looking up. And I felt it disturbing
to find in the examples German and English element of speech mixed. A clear
Adjustment into one ot the both directions I would have very much welcomed.
For this reason I can grant only 4 of 5 stars to the work. Nevertheless I
wish much fun to each reader with the reading."
