Hey guys, have you tried out xmlunit?   http://xmlunit.sourceforge.net

I believe it is precisely what you asked for.

I used it awhile ago and it seems to work just fine.  It is pure java so 
somebody should write up an
Ant task for it and publish it as either an optional or external task.
