The task uses Java's Properties class. From the Java documentation:
  The key and value characters #, !, =, and : are written with a preceding
  slash to ensure that they are properly loaded. 

As for comments being preserved, I'm not sure how that would work, given the 
current way this is all being done. (It's also why the order of the properties 
in the file isn't preserved, either.)
