Not sure if this is necessary, but, just for the record concerning Steve 
Loughran's comment about my inferring that ant's behavior must have changed: 

I asked a co-worker if he had ever run ant without using an XML header. He said 
he hadn't. 

I'm not motivated to find out if there was an actual change. If someone else 
is, I suppose they could check JavaWorld (Japan) for errata, or contact them to 
see if they tested the sample listing after translating the comments, and, if 
so, on what version.
