Subject Re: optional tasks web page for ANT 2 ? or before ?

It wasn't really a 'hack' in that it was fairly well done (IMHO! :) - an
interface is all that was needed for a task writer. And of course the
obligatory changes to IntrospectionHelper. There was nothing hard to
support about it - it was very simply implemented.

All you're accomplishing is making folks wonder why the rest of the world
can make plugin-capable software yet the award-winning Java build tool
cannot. *shrug* I don't really understand why you're fighting this
because you've got myrmidon waiting in the wings, and if its good enough to
run Ant 1.x builds and make all our headaches go away in the extensibility
category then you've no doubt got a real winner and it'll supercede Ant 1.x
and there will not be an Ant 1.6. Right?! :))

I don't have time to mess with ProjectHelper between now and Ant 1.5
cut-off.

Do you want me to re-propose that same change? Is just the way it came off
then putting you off, but the actual code is ok? Think of <ejbjar>. Think
of XDoclet.

    Erik

It was a hack - not some elegant design that is easy to support in the
future,
portable to future problems and so forth. We already have to live with
plenty
of ugly constructs because someone added in hacks to solve their immediate
problem (if/unless on targets anyone?). If you wanted to do it properly and
make sure it is both extensible and easy to support then I would be all for
it - hell I would help you do it. Thats not how it was proposed though.

Besides - given the recent ProjectHelper refactorings you can now add any
arbitrary configuration system for tasks. Theres a few limitations;
configurer must be in same classloader as ant and proprty must be set (or is
it read out of a services file????). If you really want it implement it like
that and see how it works. That would be one way to validate your new
configurer mods.
