You' re right indeed, no point to go back to text file. Eclipse has a nice
.classpath to make reuse easy.

what about a mix between project and paths syntax ?

basedir could be overridden it could inherit properties as well so that for
example you could define:

<paths basedir=".">
    <path id="jdk-tools" location="${java.home}/lib/tools.jar"/>
    <path id="xalanfull">
        <pathelement location="xalan/lib/xalan.jar"/>
        <pathelement location="xalan/lib/xml-apis.jar"/>
    <path>
    <path id="xerces" location="xerces/xerces.jar"/>
    ...
</paths>
