The exceptional case that you note can still be solved by adding an attribute treatAsURL which by default is true and user may want to turn it off ;-) Wonder how PHP's file mechanism solves it in Netware tho'. PHP lets you open a file (whether it is from the disk or remotely) using the file(String) syntax. I had actually just borrwed the idea.
