Gerhard, this behaviour really comes from the Runtime.exec 
implementation of the JVM. You can use an attribute vmlauncher="false" 
to not use the VM based facilities. This will use the features of the 
Windows shell which should remove the need to specify .exe on the 
command name.

Alternatively, you could create a symbolic link on Unix from jidl.exe to 
jidl. Pretty distasteful but it would work, I guess.
