  With Ant 1.1 I would define a property on the command line and then use this property to
set the basedir.  In Ant 1.2 if this is done than project.getBaseDir() returns a bad directory
name.  This is used to set the working directory for a Jikes compiler which than causes it
to fail.

+ I can partly confirm this. Does work in Ant 1.2 as described in the original 
+ description, but can not reproduce in Ant 1.1. 
+ Ant just appends the value contained in basedir to the current directory and 
+ does not resolve the property.
