Yah, it's out of date.

The examples still live in $ACTIVEMQ_HOME/examples, but there are more of
them, and separated out by protocol.

Check out the $ACTIVEMQ_HOME/examples/openwire/java

Would be great if you could update the wiki page too if you get a sec :)
