Your disk drive/OS will correlate heavily with your persistence performance.
Also whether or not you sync to disk, your message sizes, how much of the
index is kept in memory, write buffer sizes, etc, etc.

Take a look at http://activemq.apache.org/kahadb.html

and start benchmarking :)
