Which version are you using?

ActiveMQ in 5.7 defaults to 1G of heap space.... if the OS cannot allocate
that much virtual mem, it spits out that error. Maybe try changing the
settings to use a lower heap size:

export ACTIVEMQ_OPTS_MEMORY="-Xmx512M -Xms512M"

Might also take a look at the memory usage on your unix machine...
