a  network connector keeps an open tcp 'openwire' connection to its
peer. This receives advisory demand information about consumers and is
used to forward(send) messages when required.
The protocol can be changed to http if that is easier to propagate
through a firewall.
You can introduce parallel connections by adding an additional network
connector.
