i found the solution. you need to cast your ApplicationContext class to
AbstractApplicationContext

ApplicationContext context= new
ClassPathXmlApplicationContext("classpath:appContext.xml");
    	
//do everything here        
        ((AbstractApplicationContext) context).close();
