After analyzing the downloaded response, it looks like it's a gziped copy of the downloads web page, which sounds reasonable. The reason that Safari seems to have problem with the page is the name of the link: http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.cgi/activemq/apache-activemq/5.0.0/apache-activemq-5.0.0.tar.gz Safari looks at the file and makes the assumption based on it's internal mime-types and the file name that it should be receiving a gzipped file.
