I wasn't refering to the whole packages - just the packaging files -
various configuration files that tell the packaging system how to build
the package.

Normally, this means adding a `debian' directory with some files in it.

Here is an example of what might be added:

./debian
./debian/changelog
./debian/compat
./debian/control
./debian/copyright
./debian/docs
./debian/pkgname.README.Debian
./debian/pkgname.install
./debian/pkgname.links
./debian/patches
./debian/patches/series
./debian/patches/12345.patch
./debian/rules
