Yup that is GNU java... And from what I can tell it doesn't work very well with most apps.
Yet unfortunatly many linux distros come with that on the path which hoses many users. 

Use suns JVM and life will be much easier ;-)

What's gij? Are you running the GNU version of Java? Try the Sun
version of Java and see if that works.
