It appears that WCF does not support the request/reply model

"The request-reply model is indeed inadequate for a queued transport (e.g. you can't block
a thread while waiting for the response). You can correlate messages at the application level,
typically using a durably stored correlation indicator (e.g. purchase order number). To process
responses you would need a response queue and a service that would process messages sent to
that queue."
