I went back and revisited
http://www.infoq.com/news/2008/05/activemq-5.1-release and am a bit confused
now.  According to it they've added in an API for viewing JMS statistics.

How does this tie in with the JMX?

Just to clarify I am trying to get the statistics in a java program.  We can
already use the web method of getting statistics but the desire is to
incorporate those statistics into our program.
