I'm not sure why you want to get rid of the Endian class. The WORDS_BIGENDIAN macro can be
replaced with...

  const int t1 = 1;
  const char* const t2 = (const char* const) &a;
  if (t1 != *t2)
  {
  ....

All modern compilers will optimize this to choose either one branch or the other. But, it
probably would make sense to move the code from Endian.cpp to Endian.h. That way the compiler
can inline the code at compile time rather than link time.
