    topic: "1) 2.2.x maven 2) jmappane 3) branches 4) gc merge 5) joins w/ filter 6) www.geotools.org redirect

    + +

    aaime Topics?
+ aaime Let's not speak all togheter, order plase
    + iant_ jmappane
    + chorner maven 1 on 2.2.x
    + aaime branches
    + aaime gc merge
+ aaime (the latter one is for simboss to discuss when he cames back from dinner)
+ jgarnett joins, now that we have an example .... but only if justin or that nice user shows up.
+ aaime Plenty of topics I'd say
+ jgarnett andrea do you mind running the meeting today? kick me out if I talk to much that kind of thing?
+ aaime Ok, I can try
    + aaime So, 1), 2.2.x vs maven
    + aaime (vs maven 1)
+ aaime My take: do we really still need maven 1?
+ chorner yes... can we kill it?
+ jgarnett nope, we just said we would release 2.2.0 with it .. and then kill it.
+ jgarnett rgould made the statement ... is he around to retract it?
+ aaime Ah, ok, but this means someone will have to fix the build
+ chorner I see another confused user – and i'm convinced that it will build at the moment
    + chorner *not convinced
    + aaime See http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-866
+ jgarnett since he makes (and uploads releases) I figure it is his call ...
+ aaime But he's not here, ain't it?
+ jgarnett um: if we do not have a will to maintain maven 1, then we should kill it ...
    + aaime (he)
+ jgarnett (just pinged him, hopefully he will show)
    + chorner i think he's on holiday
+ aaime When do we plan to release 2.2.0?
+ aaime Do we have a schedule?
+ jgarnett "when udig 1.1 is released"
+ jgarnett or if GeoServer makes it ...
+ aaime Not much of a schedule then
    + rgould hi
+ aaime Richard, we are speaking about maven 1 in 2.2.x
+ aaime Apparently users do have problems
+ aaime But many of us don't build with maven 1 anymore
    + rgould Right
+ aaime Are you going to fix the maven 1 build? It seems no-one is interested in mantaining it here
+ aaime As Jody said, it's your call
+ rgould Was there a point where were going to cut the maven 1 build anyway?
+ jgarnett if you are not interested then we can vote on removing it - we said we would cut it after 2.2.0
+ rgould I thought it was to removed for the 2.2 final release
    + rgould to be removed
+ rgould I'd rather not maintain two separate build systems
+ rgould and everyone seems to be content with maven 2
+ aaime Well, what's the point of having still a maven 1 build? Ah, users that still build with maven 1, right?
+ aaime Or we can publish on m1 repo's with maven 2 as well?
    + rgould Right
+ rgould Hmm.. I don't know if we can or not
+ rgould That woudl require a bit of research
+ iant_ We still need an M1 repo
    + chorner why a M1 repo?
    + aaime Hum: http://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-one-plugin/install-maven-one-repository-mojo.html
+ jgarnett iant_ would you be willing to look into the maven 1 build issues then?
+ aaime Because there are users still using maven 1
+ aaime The repo format are not the same
+ iant_ otherwise I have to force all my users to change to M2 and they are still struggling with swtiching to SVN
+ aaime The above plugin seems to be able to publish from a maven 2 build to a maven 1 repo
+ iant_ I havn't really got time to look into the build, I use m2 for gt builds but I have other projects that use gt and m1
+ aaime In my opinion m2 is easier to use... well, at least I understand m2, I never fully managed with m1
+ chorner unfortunately maven 2 doesn't completely work yet
+ =-= avc_store is now known as acuster
+ chorner i suppose we should keep m1 around for a little while longer, but I support cutting it upon final release
+ aaime Really? What problems do we still have with m2?
+ aaime Anyway, time is passing. Either we have someone willing to maintain m1 build files, or we can't support them
+ chorner it would be nice to have wagon-webdav working – so we can deploy to lists.refractions automatically
+ aaime Who is going to mantain m1 build files for 2.2.x?
+ jgarnett andirea I think that is your answer, time to ask the geotools list for a volunteer, and if not close those jira issues as wont fix
+ aaime No one? Then I suggest at least to post a message to the users: don't use m1 for builds, switch to m2 asap
+ iant_ and update the developers guide to make it clear you need m2
    + jgarnett I will post now ...
+ aaime That's as much as we can do
    + aaime Cool. Next topic
    + aaime 2) JMapPane
+ iant_ Just a heads up that I have a basic map pane working in http://svn.geotools.org/geotools/trunk/spike/ian/
+ aaime What renderer is it using? Still Renderer2D?
+ iant_ if people could play with it and give me some feed back that would be good.
+ iant_ It uses a GTRenderer of your choice, I've tested it with Streaming Renderer
+ aaime Cool, I like choice
+ aaime This will accomodate both people with a need for speed and small data, and people with huge data
+ aaime I'll try it out, but I will find enough time only at the end of the week
+ iant_ at present all it does is draw maps, I intend to add some sort of selection/highlighting this week
+ aaime Maybe you can post a request on both the mailing list for people to try it out
+ aaime Having a little demo would be even better
+ iant_ there is a demo/test in there
    + aaime Good
+ jgarnett Thanks for stepping up here Ian, I was very sad to see the user list troubed (and surprised) by the retiring of StyledMapPane.
+ iant_ I may try to get spearfish to work too
    + jgarnett kudos
+ aaime I'd like to see it at work with the new gc renderers
+ jgarnett acuster, this is the widget we need to get demos for the documentation visible
+ iant_ Does anyone have a view as to where it should live
+ aaime interactive rendering of coverages have been such a pain
+ jgarnett iant_ if we can maintain it, I would not mind it living in "ext"
+ aaime Heh... geowidgets maybe, but ext is good too
+ jgarnett Just not as a core part of the library ... we can offer it to geowidgets when we find them again
+ iant_ yeah those were my thoughts too
    + aaime Cool.
    + aaime Next topic then?
+ aaime Or do you want do give us some more details?
    + iant_ no thats fine
    + aaime 3) branches
+ aaime I proposed a few guidelines for branches on the ml
+ aaime I'd like to hear some comments
    + acuster yes
+ jgarnett andrea thank you for the well articulated email
+ jgarnett I agree that we should be much more careful about giving out branches...
+ aaime But gc and gm show sometimes it's inevitable
+ aaime Yet, I'd like to have them a little more visible
+ aaime And better "trackable" for others
+ aaime Othewise they become black boxes and merges a gift with surprises included
+ jgarnett Andrea perhaps something like the module matrix page?
+ jgarnett or we could make them their own jira items? nope that is not scalable...
+ jgarnett They could be their own jira "version", thus be able to document what they are actually working on.
+ aaime A "changes.txt" file somewhere in the root of the branch would be fine
+ aaime Low tech, but hopefully will be kept up to date
+ jgarnett As far as I know their are two branches out there, and two proposed.
+ jgarnett FM and GC are well known
+ jgarnett and the Geometry and nD branches are new or proposed.
+ jgarnett nD being the extention of the GC work.
+ jgarnett Andrea do we intend to manage things differently for either of these two undertakings?
+ aaime No, I'd personally like to see uniformity out there, aka "that's how we do things folks"!
+ aaime (just my point of view)
+ aaime The matrix page is a little confusing if you want to know what happened in a branch in my opinion
+ aaime A classic changelog would be more readable?
+ jgarnett sorry andrea was that "create a branch for nD", or create a module for nD ?
+ aaime Good question. Cannot answer that
+ jgarnett perhaps we could ask simboss if a module could be created for nD work ?
+ aaime If nD need lots of changes in the Coverage classes, then probably a branch is what we need
+ jgarnett I think it would be a new implementation against a new interface.
+ aaime Otherwise, I think everybody would really prefer a module
+ jgarnett perhaps next topic, simboss is not here?
+ jgarnett And thanks for continuing the discussion, branches is something we all want to see fixed.
+ aaime Final question: if we agree on the contents of my mail, should I update the developers guide?
    + jgarnett Yes.
+ aaime Or we do want to think about it a little more?
+ jgarnett I am just thinking if the developers guide says much different...
+ aaime I'm wondering if the developers guide says anything at all :-p
    + aaime Ok, next topic
+ jgarnett it does, under hacking.
    + aaime Simboss, you there?
+ jgarnett basically make a proposal, IRC meeting will tell you module or branch
+ aaime Oh, bad Andrea then, should have read the documentation better
+ aaime http://geotools.codehaus.org/display/GEOT/Home is not working (from geotools.codehaus.org)
+ jgarnett Andrea can I make a page for branches? and each child page can be FM or GC ?
    + aaime Sure
+ aaime Ok, since simboss is not there, joins and filters?
+ jgarnett andrea, can you review the developers guide, and edit it to indicate that a module is preferable to a branch ?
+ jgarnett Right this was mostly to tak about a facinating email sent to the list about
+ jgarnett alias and joins using the existing filter syntax
+ aaime We miss both Justin and the user?
+ jgarnett Did anyone follow the email?
+ jgarnett okay, so next topic? Other then me expressing enthusiasm ...
+ aaime Sorry Jody, I just skimmed thu it
+ aaime It's interesting, yet a bit far from where gt2 is now
    + aaime Hum, ok 6) www.geotools.org
+ aaime Can we redirect it to the actual home page? Users are getting confused
+ jgarnett we cannot, james can
+ jgarnett can anyone find james?
    + iant_ not recently
+ rgould I saw him on yahoo the other day
+ rgould should I ping him if I see him on again?
+ jgarnett On a related note, "auto james" is emailing the list w/ build failed hate mail - can someone shut it off please?
+ aaime Btw, where is out actual home page? Is it geotools.codehaus.org?
    + jgarnett please rgould
    + jgarnett geotools.org
+ aaime No, I mean the real home page
+ aaime geotools.org is... nothing... just a redirect
    + jgarnett http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOTOOLS/Home
+ jgarnett real home page, no redirect
+ iant_ I'm trying to shut that off but I need James' password to do that too and the guy I think knows is travelling cross country at the moment
    + aaime And what's that geotools.codehaus.org then?
    + jgarnett another redirect
+ aaime Ah... with a different face thought
    + jgarnett joy
+ chorner can we block the source e-mail address from the list?
+ iant_ that should work until I can kill it
+ jgarnett perhaps, let me try SF admin mojo
+ jgarnett but that is it for topics, thanks for running a tight meeting Andrea
+ chorner oh, trunk is broken i think
+ jgarnett what is the email that sends the hatemail? I deleted them all ...
    + chorner jrm33@psu.edu
+ aaime Well, we still miss point 4), we we need simboss for it
    + Jesse_Eichar77 cd resvn st
+ jgarnett andrea I know both you and jesse have been in contact ...
+ jgarnett ... any impressions from the peanut gallery?
+ jgarnett Only real question left from last week is - is it ready?
+ Jesse_Eichar77 I haven't looked in real depth but I've played with the rendering and had talks with him and I think it is much better than what is on trunk right now. So a merge would not be out of place at all.
+ jgarnett I tried a checkout and found legacy still around ...
+ jgarnett but have not tried hooking it up to any real program yet...
+ aaime Well, since simboss is not here, I believe we have finished?
+ jgarnett yep, thanks for running things.
+ jgarnett I will grab logs.

The major feature enhancement for this release is superior support for KML/KMZ. GeoServer can now be a server for Google Earth, from any of the existing data formats. Features include streaming KML/KMZ, ability for users to configure return of Placemarks or Ground overlay based on, and a built in 'reflector' to make WMS easily available as a Network Link. There is also an added SLD editor, to make it easier to style a map. Improvements have also been done for speed, passing more of the rendering infrastructure back to the database, as we have upgraded to GeoTools 2.2.x.

    1) GC 2) FM 3) crazy javadocs
-simboss__ ciao a tutti== hi all
    - jdeolive howdy
    - jgarnett So meeting time?
    - jgarnett I think chorner and jesse are in the middle of a release ...
    - chorner nods
    - jgarnett .. and I am hacking away (with no progress to report)
    - jgarnett so we need someone to run this meeting
    - jdeolive not it
    - jgarnett simboss__ tag!
    - jdeolive sigh, i guess i can run it
    - jdeolive alrighty, lets come up with agenda
    - jdeolive i wouldn't mind hearing how GC stuff is going
    - jdeolive 1. GC
    - jdeolive anyone else?
    - jdeolive no change on IP so nothing there
    - jdeolive jody has been hacking a bit on FM but not much to report
    - jdeolive should be a quick meeting
    - Jesse_Eichar77 haven' been in geotools this week so nothing from me
    - =-= jgarnett has changed the topic to "1. GC 2. FM -1) IP"
    - jdeolive ok, so I think simboss has the stage
    - jdeolive 1) GC
    - jgarnett not sure simboss is alive
    - jdeolive should make for an even quicker meeting then
    - jgarnett 2) FM
    - Jesse_Eichar77 I can say a bit until simboss comes alive.
    - jdeolive cool
    - jdeolive your up
    - jgarnett I ported over the feature visitor stuff that cory wrote
    - jgarnett mostly with out incident.
    - jdeolive jgarnett, please dont speak out of turn!!
    - Jesse_Eichar77 I don't know all the details but he's been working on Streaming Renderer to get it working with his changes and the changes to the CRS stuff.
    - jgarnett sorry jesse (did not figure out you had the floor)
    - Jesse_Eichar77 (the use of the EPSG athority factory).
    - Jesse_Eichar77 He's got it running and is now doing some refactoring to clean it up a bit because it is a pretty messy class. (thanks simboss)
    - jdeolive StreamingRenderer is messy?
    - Jesse_Eichar77 I'm going to look it over for him when he's done but he hasn't given me the go ahead yet.
    - Jesse_Eichar77 StreamingRenderer is in better state than it once was but is still kind of hard to follow what is happening.
    - jdeolive yeah i found that
    - Jesse_Eichar77 there are a lot of methods that are never called etc...
    - Jesse_Eichar77
    - Jesse_Eichar77 so That about what I know. Pretty promising stuff though.
    - jdeolive cool, looking forward to seeing it shine
    - jgarnett so Jesse is that a thumbs up for bringing GC onto trunk?
    - jgarnett aka you guys were going to try it out and report back?
    - Jesse_Eichar77 He has a few tests that fail right now
    - Jesse_Eichar77 but do you think we can get him on trunk once the tests are passing and he can finish up there?
    - jgarnett Depends Jesse
    - jgarnett One question I asked last week, what modules does the GC branch impact?
    - jgarnett I imagine coverage, rendering and any image plugins?
    - jgarnett does it effect main very much?
    - Jesse_Eichar77 Referencing, so Martin would have to merge that and those you mentioned.
    - Jesse_Eichar77 main did not get hit much...
    - Jesse_Eichar77 I don't remember what I saw right off, but main was almost completely left alone.
    - jgarnett That is some good news, but I wish I had an idea what was effected.
    - jgarnett We have not started porting the rendering or jdbc modules to FM.
    - Jesse_Eichar77 do a merge and you will see. It only takes a few minutes and gives you a pretty good idea. You can do the test run so it doesn't change anything.
    - jgarnett In FM main is split into three modules Jesse.
    - jgarnett was thinking of doing the same to trunk
    - jgarnett but yes we can merge package by package.
    - jgarnett So Jesse you have checked things out? Does it fix the problems you were having with uDig rendering?
    - jgarnett or is it expected to have any effect.
    - Jesse_Eichar77 I think I'd have to try it with udig to know for sure but I think it does fix it based on previous talks we've had.
    - jgarnett Sweet.
    - simboss__ sorry guys
    - simboss__ I was having dinner
    - jgarnett Hi again Jesse, simboss woke up as well.
    - Jesse_Eichar77 sorry about that
    - simboss__ is there anybody out there?
    - jgarnett yes
    - Jesse_Eichar77 I think we're waiting for a GC update... Isn't that the case jdeolive?
    - jgarnett we are waiting for you to talk, Jesse has told us a little about the GC merge attempt.
    - simboss__ ah ok sorry
    - simboss__ I just read what Jesse said
    - simboss__ and it is basically mostly what I wass going to say
    - simboss__ I am almost done
    - simboss__ with refactoring streaming renderer
    - simboss__ at least up to the amount I wanted to do for the moment
    - simboss__ with another 2 hours of work
    - simboss__ I might ask him to take over
    - simboss__ and take a look at it
    - simboss__ besides
    - simboss__ streaming renderer
    - simboss__ I need around a week to complete the rest
    - simboss__ then I might focus on meging back
    - simboss__ but I am still waiting for an update from Martin
    - simboss__ on the CRS thind
    - simboss__ thing
    - simboss__ I implemented a temporary solution
    - simboss__ but I reaally would like to talk to him
    - simboss__ to see what he is doing
    - aaime Hi
    - aaime Sorry to be late
    - aaime Thunders and black-outs here
    - simboss__ as far as the streaming renderer is concerned
    - jgarnett glad you could make it - zap
    - simboss__ I would like to talk to dblasby
    - simboss__ since he said
    - simboss__ he was gooing to heavily refactor it
    - jgarnett dblasby is away in egypt right now, not sure when he will be back.
    - simboss__ and we agree and me going first
    - simboss__ agrred
    - jgarnett I would proceed without him...
    - simboss__ and then him going right after
    - simboss__ is he on vacation there?
    - jgarnett Not sure I just asked him to send pictures.
    - simboss__ ah ah ok
    - simboss__ well for the moment
    - simboss__ I guess I have nothing more to say
    - simboss__ thanks
    - jgarnett Simboss I was hoping to hear from you that merging back is a good thing - aka a thumbs up!
    - jgarnett it sounds like it is? I have yet to hear you our Jesse say otherwise...
    - simboss__ well, for the moment it is not
    - simboss__ simply because neither me or him did the merge back
    - simboss__ he started with lookig for problems
    - simboss__ I am finishing things up
    - simboss__ and besides
    - simboss__ what Martin is doing is a kind of fuzzy right now
    - aaime What do you mean by fuzzy?
    - simboss__ if I should report I would say that things are proceeding quite smoothly with a couple of question marks
    - simboss__ I did not manage to talk to him directly
    - simboss__ (he is super buse)
    - simboss__ (busy)
    - simboss__ therefore
    - simboss__ I do not know if he is going to follow what we said about the OrderedBlahBlahAuthority or not
    - simboss__ I would want to duplicate things
    - simboss__ ending up with two different
    - simboss__ OrderedBlahBlahAuthorities
    - simboss__ btw, Martin's implementation would always be better than mine
    - aaime That I understand. The problem now is that coverage merge is kind of blocking any other activity on gt2
    - jgarnett Not sure on that andrea - hard to know what is going on.
    - aaime So, if there's anything I can do... I'll be slowly coming back in my role of geotools developer
    - jgarnett starting with crazy javadocs by the looks of it
    - jgarnett Okay I think I will do a quick update on FM and we can get out of here ...
    - jgarnett 2) FM
    - jgarnett FM has been held up by ...
    - jgarnett Me!
    - jgarnett seriously I have been doing a review, and kicking the SimpleFeature / SimpleFeatureCollection ideas around to try and
    - jgarnett make porting a bit easier.
    - jgarnett Cory has supplied some updates to fix my spelling.
    - jgarnett The remainging thing to do before we reach milestone 1 is to update the SimpleFeatureBuilder class
    - aaime Btw, just as an extra topic, I'd like to speak about that javadoc + uml thing I wrote (later, at the end of the meeting)
    - jgarnett So I hope to be out of the way very soon.
    - jgarnett any questions about FM or shall I pass this over to andrea?
    - simboss__ I kind of have one
    - jgarnett sure.
    - simboss__ I am in the processing of studying the feature model and related classes because I would like to help marting with the GO1
    - simboss__ (well not me directly but it is the same)
    - simboss__ Is FM going to clean up things
    - simboss__ ?
    - simboss__ I mean
    - simboss__ will FM bring clarity in managing features and datastores
    - jgarnett yes it really is already cleaning up a lot of things.
    - simboss__ I have found tons of deprecacted classes
    - jgarnett not so much datastores yet
    - simboss__ sometimes it is hard to find the way to actually do things for me
    - jgarnett ah the natural removal of deprecated classes has occured for FM
    - simboss__ (very unexperienced)
    - jgarnett (aka FeatureResults is gone)
    - simboss__ cool
    - simboss__ then I am looking forward to seeing it
    - jgarnett We are really just focused on feature and feature collection here, datastore can happen another day.
    - jgarnett It is very cool, indeed it is hard to work on 2.2.x or trunk as every where I look I see something that I knows is fixed on FM.
    - jgarnett 3) crazy javadocs
    - jgarnett (sorry to cut this off, we gotta keep the meeting going)
    - jgarnett Andrea - you have the floor.
    - aaime Ok, everybody who has looked at the javadoc + uml diagrams, please raise your hand and provide comments
    - aaime Like, don't like, wtf is that
    - aaime For those who haven't paid attention to the mailing list, here: http://www.andrea-aime.name/static/gt2-api/index.html
    - aaime The only comments I've seen are about fur ball diagrams.
    - Jesse_Eichar77 raising the like hand
    - aaime I know, I can avoid depicting dependencies althogheter
    - aaime Yet, some diagrams would loose much
    - aaime And others in fact would become more readable
    - aaime I basically have two questions:
    - aaime * do people find them useful
    - aaime * what can I do to improve them
    - aaime * do we want that as the standard way to generate javadoc for the users
    - aaime (c++ people has had that for years with doxygen)
    - jgarnett My only comment was that I do not care so much about dependencies in a package (I expect that)
    - jgarnett associations and inheiritance yes
    - jgarnett But I do really like the pictures)
    - aaime So you would want to see dependencies only if outside of the package.
    - aaime Yes, makes sense
    - aaime Also, in these diagrams you don't see all of the dependencies, but only those that can be reverse engineered using method arguments
    - aaime I can add also the import ones, but then the diagrams would really turn into a fur ball
    - aaime I could also lessen them by inspecting only, say, public methods (now I inspect them all)
    - aaime finally, notice that the pretty pictures are clickable, so you can literally navigate the dependencies
    - aaime (and associations)
    - aaime Ok, I bored you enough
    - groldan keep inspecting the private stuff, it would help with dependencies
    - aaime I'll wait for comments on the mailing list, since everybody besides Jesse and Jody is either overwelmed or bored
    - aaime :-p
    - aaime Yes Gabriel, the problem is that people are complaining some diagrams are too complex
    - jgarnett fun about the clickable
    - aaime Hard to blame them for diagrams like, say,
    - aaime (just a moment)
    - aaime http://www.andrea-aime.name/static/gt2-api/org/geotools/data/FeatureSource.html
    - groldan nice exercise
    - jgarnett ah that is pretty
    - aaime In fact, being reverse engineered, it's just a picture of reality with no make up
    - groldan I would love a middle solution like using annotations to specify which ones to care of
    - aaime I tried, UmlGraph can produce whatever diagram you may want.
    - groldan so, by default, avoid private fields, at least explicitly otherwise stated
    - groldan ?
    - aaime I ended up not using it, it takes too much time to annotate the sources
    - aaime Yet, of course you can disable relationship and dependency inference and annotate by hand
    - aaime See: http://www.spinellis.gr/sw/umlgraph/doc/cd-model.html
    - jdeolive 5 minute warning
    - aaime UmlGraph is one tool I've been working on since december
    - aaime And I then built UmlDoc on top of it
    - aaime Justin, I'm really done
    - aaime I think anybody interested can join the discussion on the mailing list
    - jdeolive ok, then i think we can call it a wrap, those interested feel free to hang out and keep on going on this topic
    - jgarnett I will wrap up the logs, thanks everyone.

The JTS geometry branch has been created, configured for maven, and compiles cleanly. The stubbed out classes have been removed and the branch has been aligned with revision 19778 of trunk.

    - -

The current head scratcher is: "What to do with requests for spatial operations on bad (non cartesian) coordinate systems?"

    - -

The next item for improvement: Universal use of "NotifyingCollections". This is a good idea in the original code and I want to make sure it is used everywhere a collection is used.
