For the latter, there are integration tests, that are skipped if no local copy of MongoDB is installed on your system. However, we don't yet describe how to set this up. Maybe the best location for this would be on the website (or the wiki) with a link to that location from the source code (in case developers are looking at the test and wondering how to set it up).
