Some immediate thoughts:

1. Regarding node08 having so many files, maybe it was the last DN that had free space?
2. Look in the trash folder for the missing referenced WAL files
3. For you OOME using the HDFS CLI, I think you can increase the amount of memory that the
client will use with: export HADOOP_CLIENT_OPTS="-Xmx1G" (or something like that).
