Make sure you're using the right configuration files (ACCUMULO_HOME and/or ACCUMULO_CONF_DIR
environment variables).

If the monitor says that there are tabletservers running, your client is likely trying to
connect to an instance which isn't running (they're not looking at the same place)

A missing client.conf is not going to cause these issues for an out-of-the-box configuration
(although it's curious that the example configurations didn't contain one).
