[~melrief] Feel free to get started, if you wish. I've been experimenting with this a bit.
Take a look at [what I have here for Key|https://github.com/ctubbsii/accumulo/blob/ACCUMULO-2589/api/src/main/java/org/apache/accumulo/api/data/Key.java]
to see if it helps as a starting point.
