My concern with using some installed tool is that we now have to hope that it's going to be
installed and act the same across any flavor of Linux. I don't know if logger is something
that can be expected to be universal. 

I don't see ~10 lines of bash as a bad thing for rotating a set of stdout/stderr file redirections.

This makes it more difficult to debug failures if you have something like puppet or supervisord
ensuring that your processes are always running. We should figure out how to roll the files
instead.
