Recopying my comments...

Borrowing from HBase, they have this snippet for managing this:

{code}
hbase_rotate_log ()
{
    log=$1;
    num=5;
    if [ -n "$2" ]; then
    num=$2
    fi
    if [ -f "$log" ]; then # rotate logs
    while [ $num -gt 1 ]; do
        prev=`expr $num - 1`
        [ -f "$log.$prev" ] && mv -f "$log.$prev" "$log.$num"
        num=$prev
    done
    mv -f "$log" "$log.$num";
    fi
}
{code}

> When a server is restarted, then it overwrites the contents of the .out and .err files.
This makes it more difficult to debug failures if you have something like puppet or supervisord
ensuring that your processes are always running. We should figure out how to roll the files
instead.
