Josh Elser commented on ACCUMULO-2861:
--------------------------------------

Talked to Keith about this a little today in the context of upgrade support. We came to the
conclusion that trying to migrate to [protobuf-json|https://code.google.com/p/protobuf-json/]
might be a good solution. It seems like protobuf is a bit more usable as a simple message
library than thrift is (although, this is by no means a fixed argument that we *must* use
protobuf over thrift -- the end result would be just about the same). Since we have protobuf
from replication, it may not be bad to just use it here as well.

Regardless of what library we use, we'll still have to address the "non-structured" data in
ZooKeeper which will be difficult.

> It would be very nice if all config stored in zookeeper were human readable. I do not
remember the specific offenders, but I think some values stored in zookeeper use binary serialization.
Using something like json for these values would be much nicer.
> Upgrade would need to translate from old serialization to new.
